Australia’s David Warner, who was barred from playing in IPL 2018 due to his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal in the Newlands Test against South Africa, will be part of the upcoming edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

According to a CPL media release, Warner has been signed by St Lucia Stars as a replacement of his compatriot D’Arcy Short, who will be playing for Australia A during their tour of India at the same time.

“We are excited to bring David to the Saint Lucia Stars. David is arguably one of the greatest batsmen of the modern era and a winning player. He is going to add a lot of value on the field and in the dressing room as we pursue our first Hero CPL Title,” Stars’ General Manager, Mohammad Khan, was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

Warner will also play for Winnipeg Hawks in the Global T20 Canada League later this month. After playing in Canada, he will return to Australia for the Darwin Strike League in July.

Regarded as one of the most destructive batsmen in world cricket, Warner’s career hit rock bottom following the above mentioned controversy during Australia’s tour of South Africa earlier this year.

It was reported that Warner was the mastermind of the ball-tampering scandal that also involved the then Steve Smith and opener Cameron Bancroft. Subsequently, Warner and Smith were handed a 12-month ban while Bancroft was slapped with a nine-month ban.

Though CA banned them from playing international and Sheffield Shield cricket, they were free to play at club level and domestic tournaments in other countries.

Warner has enjoyed plenty of success as both batsman and captain in T20 cricket around the world. He was the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad team that won the IPL title in 2016.

St Lucia Stars begin their CPL campaign against Trinbago Knight Riders on August 8.
