Hans E. Vestberg (left) will succeed Lowell C. McAdam as CEO of Verizon effective August 1, 2018.

Verizon said on Friday that Lowell McAdam will leave his role as the company's chief executive in August, with Hans Vestberg chosen to take over.

McAdam will serve as the board's executive chairman until he retires at the end of the year.
