Having directed stories on unconventional subjects ranging from sperm donation (Vicky Donor - 2012) to constipation (Piku - 2015), filmmaker Shoojit Sircar is a sportsperson at heart. And if he ever has to make a sports film, and choose a sportsperson for a biopic, Sircar can think of just one name, “Mary Kom” – the Indian Olympic boxer.
Sircar, who has been quite expressive about his love for sports on social media, says he first met Mary Kom during the shoot of a three-minute ad commercial. He says, “She’s an extraordinary athlete. The first time I interacted with her, I was clean-bowled. She, as a personality, because she came [with her] two daughters, and the way she was preparing herself…”
Mention that there are a lot of sports biopics coming up and the football fanatic says, “Yes, there are, and I hope they do justice to sports. I have been thinking of many subjects to work around football, but nothing has inspired me. ‘Sports’ is a good subject. But, nothing has inspired me to make a film. Since you asked about one sportsperson who I would like to make a film on, I said Mary Kom because I think she’s an extraordinary athlete,” adds Sircar, when in Delhi recently for the screening of his new release October, at the recently concluded 13th Habitat Film Festival.

Has he seen Omung Kumar’s film Mary Kom (2014) – based on the life of the boxer – and does he intend to explore a subject that’s recently filmed? “No, I haven’t seen the film. But, I can still make it! I would want to [make a film on her]. I think Mary Kom should be an international star. I still feel a lot is left (to be told). I really want that a character like her should be on the international platform. Making a film on Mary Kom means that people should be watching it across the globe; it should be that level. I thought [it would] move the world… You can make a story again; that’s your interpretation. It happens many times… Shakespeare has been made [in] million interpretations; people made four to five Bhagat Singh films. [So] as long as I can engage the audience, that’s fine.”
But he still hasn’t decided when he will realise his dream. “When will I make [a film on Mary Kom] ... I don’t know, but I really want to... She’s one of the few people you get inspired from.”
