Did Veere Di Wedding mellow down cuss words in the film at the behest of the Central Board of Film Certification? Reports emerged a day ago suggested that the censor board, in an unprecedented move, suggested alternate curse words for the Sonam Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor’s Veere Di Wedding.
A Mid-day report claimed the CBFC decided not to omit the curses entirely in Veere Di Wedding but replace them with more mellow ones. Ch***ya became bewakoof, be*****od became pencho, a***ole became jackass and so on. The words ‘ch**iya’ and ‘ku**ya’ were also muted in the film.
Other changes made include replacing ‘Kishan Kanhaiyya’ with ‘Kishan Uncle’ and ‘tawaayaf’ with ‘rawayat’. A visual of a vibrator was also partially blurred. When HT contacted CBFC member Vivek Agnihotri, he said, “CBFC never suggests such things, it’s another thing that filmmakers use the body to promote their films but it’s an obsolete tactic.”
Veere Di Wedding was banned in Pakistan due to its risque nature. “Veere Di Wedding was screened before the full board and all members were surprised to see such content being displayed. This film is not acceptable in our society due to its vulgarity and sexual dialogues spoken by the four girls and so, we decided to ban it,” a senior Pakistani CBFC official told Express Tribune.
The film’s producer Ekta Kapoor had said at the music launch of the film that they have not faced any trouble from the CBFC and had neither received a censor certificate. The CBFC suggestions came a day later on May 23.
