An intriguing battle is on the cards when Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 2018 Indian Premier League (IPL) Qualifier 2 at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Friday.
The winner of this match will take on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the final of the tournament at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.

This was a match Yusuf Pathan turned around in the manner only he is capable of. It was destruction in 35 minutes as Pathan sent the white ball into the inky sky and into the lower tiers of the Eden Gardens. He hit seven sixes and five fours. Set 161 to win, KKR may have still won but they wouldn’t have got there in 14.2 overs. It helped KKR climb up the standings and play the qualifier instead of the eliminator. They went on to win the IPL.

This match would be remembered not for the cricket it produced but for the time players waited to have a game. By the time Gautam Gambhir and Ishank Jaggi helped KKR win, it was almost 1:30am, almost four hours after SRH ended their innings. KKR’s pace bowlers led by Nathan Coulter-Nile (3/20), had restricted SRH to 128/7 in 20 overs. Umesh Yadav took 2/20 and it seemed that match was for KKR’s to lose when it began to rain. The revised target was 48 in 6 overs and KKR got there after losing Chris Lynn, Robin Uthappa and Yusuf Pathan with Gambhir getting 32. Among those who were unhappy with the late finish were Coulter-Nile and Sunil Gavaskar. Shah Rukh Khan was among those who called for an extra day for playoffs, a call that seems to have gone unheard.

This was a night when David Warner pricked KKR’s pride. The Knights always fancied their bowling attack but Warner hit 126 off 59 balls with 10 fours and eight sixes and ensured that there would only be one winner. Kane Williamson scored a 25-ball 40 and SRH made 209/3 before restricting KKR to 161/7 with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Siraj and Siddarth Kaul taking two wickets each.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar took 3/19 and among his scalps were Manish Pandey who was trying to make a game of getting to the target of 163. But it was Barinder Sran and Ben Cutting who had provided the early breakthroughs to ensure KKR never settled down. This was after Yuvraj Singh (41) and Moises Henriques (31) helped SRH reach 162/8 after batting first in the eliminator and win by 22 runs.

This was about Gautam Gambhir giving his opponents the Hyderabad blues. He led from the front and not for the first time. Gambhir scored an unbeaten 90 off 60 balls with 13 fours and one six as KKR, after restricting SRH to 142/7 with Umesh Yadav (3/28) and Morne Morkel (2/35), won by eight wickets in 18.2 overs.
